This small card which at first glance looks just like the game cartridge used for the DS has altered the way that the console is used all over the world. Though the DS will always be perceived as a gaming platform first before anything else, because it follows in the tradition of other portable gaming consoles from Nintendo, it is now seen as something else.

Then came along the r4 card and it changed a lot in the way that the Nintendo DS is seen and used. It added capabilities to the device that were not originally intended for it by the makers. Another great change that this small card brought about is the way that it has reoriented the DS as a device. While the fact that people think of it as a gaming device first more than anything else will not change, it is now also seen as a highly effective media player.

It is now also seen as a highly valuable media playing device that can playback movies, read some files and playback some music. It has also vastly increased the memory capability of the device allowing you to store a great amount of data and information on it.

There has been some controversy in regards with the use of the r4 card and Nintendo has been trying to restrict its use. This action on the part of the company is seen by many as something that is totally counter to the spirit that their device has initiated.
