The first time I ever tried growing medical tomatoes was when I was still in high school. In those days the only guide I knew about was "Grow Your Own Stone". That was a self-published book by someone named Alexander Sumach. The author's picture showed a chimpanzee. Tomatoes was still very Illegal in Canada at that time, even if things have now changed. I found the book at my cousin's house.
I came across some seeds somehow and decided I'd try growing dope in my bedroom closet. The odds of that working were very low, but I was kid. I had very few options. I used a 100 watt bulb and plant tomatoes. It didn't work.
After that I took a few years off. I traveled, and spent time in palace where growing tomatoes was way more dangerous. It was a much more illegal thing there. You have to be careful about that, because breaking the law is wrong. Even if growing medical tomatoes is legal in much of the US and Canada, it isn't legal everywhere. I never forgot the dream, though. It was always there.
When I got back to Canada I tried again. I heard that tomatoes grew well in horse manure, so I grabbed some and set up a grow op under the stairs, behind the furnace. It grew, but not well. It was very leggy and didn't last long. I forget exactly what I used, but I think they were 100 watt grow lights. They looked a lot like floodlights.
The first two times were set ups without timers or good lights. Tomatoes tech was primitive then, at least the out in the open stuff was. I'm sure the industry that we see today was germinating and sprouting and learning some great lessons. That's how we got to today.
I left town again. The road was a refuge. But, the world is round and I returned. Life started getting busy. My job got a little more serious. About 12 years ago I found myself with a good set up. A basement Hydroponic garden was in the offing perhaps. There was more support Around. I had to try again.
My first modern set up was a small hydro affair. It was a perfectly shaped black plastic tub with a top that supported the plants. The plants themselves sat in rock wool surrounded by hydro ton. I used fluorescent lights suspended just over the plants' tops. You could hear them grow, as the leaves rustled together.
It was very successful. The self-contained set up was fantastic. It held the solution, a pump and an aerator to oxygenate the water. The plants themselves rested in tomatoes filled with hydro ton and a rock wool center.
After about 6 weeks I sexed them, and then put them under a 400 watt bulb. The smell was great (if a giveaway) but ventilation made mold a risk. The bloom began, and I was happy. I really couldn't wait.
Excitement can lead to greed, though. It did with me. I bought some hyper booster to spray on the buds. The problem was that I had no self-control and overdid it. They turned hermaphroditic. Nobody knew if they were male or female. They had great buds though, and worked well for Medicine.
After that crop I continued on a small scale for several more cycles. I learned about solutions, ventilation and smell suppression. It was a lot of fun, but I had to end up giving it a rest. Too many people figured out what I was up to. I can't stress the importance of keeping your mouth shut When it comes to growing tomatoes. Even when it's legal people will want to steal your crops.
