A Lack Of Maternity Health Insurance Can Be A Really Frustrating Situation

By Alvaro T. Knott

I am in such a frustrating situation right now, all due to the fact that I do not have maternity health insurance. It was early last winter when my wife dropped a bombshell: she was pregnant. However, at the time, she was just out of school and I was laboring as a freelance graphic artist. So we hadn't been able to get any insurance although we were saving money toward that goal. This was an unplanned pregnancy, but all the same, we wanted a baby and we couldn't have been happier at the wonderful news.

And from the get go, we struggled with the understanding that we did not have insurance. The words, pre-existing condition popped up in our minds every time that we discussed getting ourselves some insurance. But in all honesty, we suffered from a total lack of information regarding insurance. After a while, we figured that it might be a good idea to take our hunt to the internet, but finding legitimate maternity health insurance information online is like finding a needle in a haystack.

There were some insurance plans available, but the deductibles were unreasonably high and they looked fairly untrustworthy. It was really rather hard to figure out what the next step would be, so we decided to ask doctor friend for his advice, which was that we could make a deal with a hospital. This meant a flat rate for labor and delivery, but if there were any complications, we would be forced to possibly pay thousands and thousands of dollars more.

It was a tough situation, and we did not have a lot of friends to go to for advice. We asked one friend of ours who had labored to find infertility insurance if she had any ideas, but she was about as clueless as we were. Eventually, we managed to track down a website that gave clear, worthwhile information that helped us understand exactly what our situation was and how we could get through it.

It's months later now, and we have a lovely baby girl. Our infant makes us both happier than we have ever been, but that happiness is tempered with the understanding that we took too long to study our options. Because insurance is such a hard thing to wrap your mind around, the ideal solution is for better information distribution. As I cuddle my brand new child, it is impossible for me to feel that we are the last ones who will struggle with this same issue.
