Used cars can have a variety of functions for people today. Many will use them either as a daily driver to get to and from work, or possibly use them as cars which are driven on occasions such as road trips or vacations. For example, do you want to build a truck for off-roading? Picking up a used vehicle that has a solid engine but some rough body work then might be for you. All you are likely worrying about is the guts of the car- so what it looks like shouldn't be much of an issue. The point is a specific output and performance, and getting the right suspension and tires put on.

Of course if the maintenance and work are not for you, think about brands which are known for longevity and going the distance. Also finding a dealership and brand which have pre-ownership policies or insurance can be a big plus. Warranties are available even on pre-owned cars these days, offering something of a safety net for customers.
