Should the designer have lots of skills, or be good at certain ones? These are questions you need to consider. There are benefits on both sides. Of course, if you have a lot of different types of graphic needs, you may be better off with someone who has a wide variety of experience. It can be expensive hiring specialists in this field. You may be able to negotiate with some of these designers. Just stand back for a moment, look at what you need done first, and start from that perspective.

If you want to hire someone, you need to look at their resume if they have one. Sure some people are just starting their careers, but a resume tells you about schooling, awards, etc - not just professional experience. You really need to focus on their professional experience if they have any. Hiring these people will probably be based upon how much experience they have listed in the resume. Hiring someone that only has work with friends and personal projects in the resume is probably not what you want to do. Use caution when giving someone a chance - it might backfire on you! Usually the inexperienced are inexperienced for a reason.

If you have someone in mind for your graphic design job, have a talk with them before you hire them. It is always a good idea to consider references and resumes. Yet despite the references, they may not be the best fit for you, something you will only know until after you hire them.

You need to make sure that you can communicate well with each other or you will be putting your project in danger. Your graphic design can have as much impact on your success as your written content. If a website or sales page doesn't look professional or appealing, people will not be inclined to do business with you. If you're not a graphic designer yourself, it's easy to downplay or forget about this critical aspect of your business. Don't do a sloppy or mediocre job on graphics just to save a few dollars, as in the long run a great graphic designer is a worthwhile investment in your business.
