The Nutrients That Athletes Need

By Ian Tate

Sports nutrition supplements are general, meaning aspiring athletes won't find anything specific or specially made for them. Athletes and regular people need the same primary supplements to include in their diets: carbohydrates, protein, fluids and fats. The only difference is that unlike people who are not active in sports, athletes require more intake so that they are able to perform in their maximum level.

Understanding Protein

Protein helps build our body, as it was explained by science. Protein helps athletes by making their bones stronger and repairing their injured muscles. Through glycogen, protein also helps store carbohydrates in their body which is very useful when exerting energy.

Understanding Carbohydrates

Smaller sugar called glucose is also an energy source and is caused by carbohydrates being processed in the body. More energy is stored in our body when we consume carbohydrates. Smaller sugar, through glycogen, will stay in the muscle and liver if not used immediately and excess glycogen will convert to fat.

What are Fats?

Like carbohydrates, another source of energy are fats. As a matter of fact, it gives the most energy your body needs. However, too much fats stored in your body and you may be on your way to having health problems. Fats also act as nerve concealers, protectors of vital organs, and distributors of vitamins E, A, D and K, letting it spread throughout your body.

What are Fluids?

One of the major concerns of athletes during training is dehydration. This happens when one lacks fluids, and even those who are not active in sports can suffer from it. Water, of course, is the first choice of remedy for dehydration. Athletes should often take fluids because they exert more energy and perform more activities.
