Surprise! There Are Low Carb Desserts

By Sharon Farmer

Sugar is one of the foods that people always crave! And in fact we are biologically designed to crave it. Sugar was in short supply during prehistoric times, so anytime people came across fruits containing sugar, they gobbled them up like manna from heaven. Today, however, the same cannot be said. Now, cakes, sweets and donuts are in abundance, so we can safely say that we are inundated with too much sugar from all sides. Avoiding sugar is now next to impossible.

People who want to lose weight and avoid sugar go for low carb diets. But don't you find it excruciatingly hard to turn your back on all those sweet, great-tasting pastries and cookies that you've grown up with? That is the reason why low carb desserts are integrated into low carb diets. Instead of grabbing that sugary cookie when you crave desserts, you instead can eat a healthy cookie that contains no sugar but yet is just as fulfilling!

You must be thinking this is too good to be true, aren't you? Low carb desserts are not a myth; it's here! They can be eaten every day when your fancy strikes you. Low carb muffins and cookies can be the perfect afternoon snack while at work. The muffins and cookies are easy to make and easy to pack into a ziplock bag or a small container so you'll never be short of good low carb food. Since low carb foods are very rare in trains and planes, you can easily bring these muffins and cookies along. I also enjoy eating low carb cereal on trips.

Where, then, can you get low carb desserts? Although chocolates and breads with low carbohydrate content are now being sold, low carb desserts are generally still not being sold in stores. Your best option, therefore, is to make them at home. The recipes aren't much different from the normal ones, except for some additional mixing and baking. That way you'll know what goes into your desserts and that it's fresh and healthy.

You might be wondering how low carb desserts are sweet when they don't contain sugars. The trick is to use artificial sweeteners instead. These sugar and honey alternatives have zero calories and zero carbohydrates. They usually taste just like sugar, especially in baked goods. You can choose from a wide selection of artificial sweeteners in the market. I personally like using sucralose, which is the main ingredient in Splenda. I've found it to taste like sugar and to be easy to use. Sharing almost the same chemical structure as sugar, sucralose has not been subjected to any serious health issues.

Flour cannot be used in baking low carb desserts; that is why there is a need for a few different ingredients. Common alternatives to flour are flaxseed meal and coconut flour. Coconut, in particular, has earned a lot of supporters among low carb dieters. Aside from being delicious, coconut contains healthy fats and is low on carbohydrates. Coconut milk and desiccated coconut shreds are also common ingredients in low carb baking as they taste great and are low carb. Nuts are also good additions to your cookie and cake recipes because they are as healthy and as low in carb. Do not be surprised when you see the many cookies and chips nowadays made from almond or peanut butter.
