Troubleshooting Point of View Cameras: Important Facts You Ought to be Aware of

By Justin Thibault

We have all come to appreciate the usefulness of point of view cameras. From the extreme sports lover to the policeman to the student to the researcher, a helmet camera has its use of being able to record events as they happen and of course, as you see it.

With advances in camera and computer technology, it is possible to share your footage, whether these are still shots or video, to friends, family and colleagues who were not with you when the action took place.

But there are moments when even the most well-crafted cameras fail. Learning how to troubleshoot your camera when this happens saves you the time, effort and money in bringing your POV cam to the pros to be checked.

The POV camera failing to turn on is a common problem encountered by many. Instead of panicking, do a systematic check of your unit to see if the batteries have been inserted and if they are, if they have been placed the right way. If you are powering up your camera using rechargeable batteries, make sure that they have been fully charged inasmuch as they will not be able to turn on your device if they only have little juice left. Another check you can also perform is to run the camera without using the memory card to see if that is where the problem lies.

It is also common to encounter problems with the memory card you are using. Because it is possible for a memory card to not work with your camera, it is always prudent to check if it does before you head out. Sometimes, the problem could be traced to the incompatibility of your memory card with your POV camera brand.

A memory card may also fail to work if it is already full so freeing up some memory by deleting videos or photos you don't need or have already saved in your computer hard drive is the only way to make your card usable again. If this is not the problem, you can also check if the memory card is damaged by using another memory card.

Disconnect the cable, turn off the camera and re-attach it to the computer if your computer does not recognize your POV camera. With the cables securely attached to both the camera and the computer, power it up to see if the computer establishes a connection. If this fails to work, go to the POV camera manufacturer's website to look for a more detailed answer to the problem.

For more information about your POV camera, read the manual that comes with it. More specific troubleshooting are usually included at the end part of the booklet. Once you feel that you have done all you can to troubleshoot your camera to no avail then that's the time to take it to be serviced. Finally, if the malfunction occurs when the camera's warranty is still in effect, be sure to use it.
