The Zen Of Auto Hobbies

By Denise Jackson

There are those of us who see the car as nothing more than a nice way to get around, and then there are those with a passion for auto hobbies. A good day for them is when nothing disturbs them while they tinker in the garage. The only thing better is when they get to take their handiwork on the road.

One type of hobbyist is the classic car connoisseur. These are the deep lovers of auto history, the ones who not only appreciate the nobles of the road, but have decided to spend their money and their time so that we all get to witness them rise from the dead. Funny, no one resents the rich guy when he's behind the wheel of an 80 year-old classic.

Many of these classics are kit cars, but kit cars can be of any sort. They are a grease monkey's fantasy, put together from ordered or even found parts together with a manual. In the same way the best cooks know when to throw away the cookbook, the best kit car enthusiasts might use the manual as a guideline, but the final product is full of their personal improvisations.

Stock car racing has its origins with the renegade mechanics and drivers during the Prohibition 1920s. Moonshiners would adjust their cars to be faster and to be able to carry more illegal liquor. Eventually these daredevils began to race each other, and stock car racing was born. Today, amateur racing is a popular recreation, benefiting from no small amount of Hollywood glamor.

If you wish to soup your ride, adding a nitrous oxide system is one way to go. A supercharger does the same work. Either will increase engine power by forcing more oxygen through.

If you're not yet wealthy, start with the little things. Line your tinted windows with neon lights. Paint designs on the hood that match your tattoos. Anyone can start down the auto hobbies road.
