Is Earning a Bachelor Degree Online Really Worth Your Time?

By Jamaica Willson

With the state of the economy in dire straights and jobless numbers climbing higher every month, may people are beginning to rethink their current career choice and want to do something in a growing field that seems to be recession proof. The one thing that maybe stopping the thousands of people who want to switch careers from doing so is the time or money; the combination would be the fact that they can't quit their current job to attend classes.

One of the most recession proof careers in the country is in the heath care field and most notably in nursing. In 2009, according to the American Association of College Nursing (AACN), the increase in enrollment in nursing schools across the country rose 3.9 percent over the 2008 enrollment statistics. What is sad and somewhat frightening is that there were thousands of qualified applicants turned away from nursing programs because of the lack of resources many colleges and universities suffer from. If a community is lacking in their nursing staff and qualified people are willing and able to set up and be trained, it should go without saying that there should be a connection and there should be no shortage of nurses.

This fact leaves several workers out of luck, as the Department of Education Department reports 40 percent of students who enter a four-year program do not finish after six years, according to the media outlet. Factors contributing to this statistic include a lack of time and financing as well as the fact that this level of education was not imperative to many employers in years past. As a result, experienced professionals who are searching for jobs today may not hold a bachelor's degree.

Fortunately, many institutions of higher learning are developing convenient online degree programs that can help working adults obtain a higher education while they develop their careers or search for new jobs. For example, Linfield College has recently launched an accelerated RN to BSN degree program for nursing professionals.

A nurse's willingness to continue his or her education, whether it's to get another degree or simply brush up on the latest nursing techniques, will show an employer that they value their job and the importance of helping people. Having the opportunity to take courses online helps make life a little easier for many people considering a job in the nursing field or continuing their nursing career. There are hundreds of accredited online nursing schools, many that do not require any campus time.

The structure of the online university learning experience is excellent, with all of the coursework that you will need completely covered to give you the best experience and education possible, but to give you the greatest amount of flexibility with regard to when you study and when you test.
