Despite the fact that talking on a cell phone while driving is dangerous, many people still continue to do it on a daily basis. Most people overestimate their ability to multi-task and that can sometimes lead to dangerous accidents. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) wants to take it even further and take the ban nationwide.

One incident which prompted lawmakers to take such drastic action is a recent accident that happened in Missouri. The accident was caused by a teen who was texting while driving. Most adults realize that it's not a good idea to drive while distracted. However, many feel like this law is taking it a bit too far. Talking on the phone is actually quite different from having a conversation with a passenger. Passengers know what's going on in the car and may even warn the driver if they notice something dangerous. Not to mention the fact that a passenger has a lot on the line; his or her own safety. There is also more pressure for someone to keep talking while their on the phone in order to keep the conversation flowing.

Bluetooth for the meantime is legal and can be used to have a conversation without having to hold the phone to ones ear. However, some studies indicate that using Bluetooth may not be that safe either. Drivers can get preoccupied with the conversation and be mentally distracted.

Some companies offer devices for sale which can be used to make a cell phone inoperable once the car starts. This would prevent the cell phone from receiving calls or any incoming text messages. The primary market for these devices are parents who want to encourage their teens to drive safely.
