There's no moral center to the book. Mr Ferriss comes across as a con man in several ways.
And if you really think people are being exploited when they take low paying jobs, next time you order a burger, tip the short order guy ten bucks. Anyway, I highly recommend this book, it's not just about making money, it's not just about quitting your nine to five job, it's about making life more livable and more meaningful.
There is a small percentage of people doing this that are making very large sums of money, but it's NOT easy and requires huge amounts of time, money, knowledge, and more. Contrary to the way the author characterizes these things, none of them are easy: SEO (search engine optimization), profitable affiliate marketing, profitable pay-per-click advertising, profitable website creation, profitable information product creation. Just make sure you have your priorities straight. Winning at Tango or Kickboxing is not it.
This book doesn't bog the reader down with statistics; doesn't promise to end the cycle of poverty overnight; and doesn't claim to offer a single path to riches. What Ferriss teaches in this book isn't like other books about getting rich. I read about this book in an in-flight magazine and thought it very much embodied my view of life: Don't delay your happiness or gratification until retirement. Seize the day and live it up now!
I recommended the book to many people, most liked it some didn't. I eagerly pre-ordered this version of the book when I first heard about it mostly because I was curious if it would really be better, and boy was it! Nothing new here either. The reason this is a best seller is that America is a slave to work nation that doesn't recognize the value of time off and living life and thus everyone's dream is to work only 4 hours a week. He hit on something here. I enthusiastically and TOTALLY agree with him on the point that we can live free lives today and not defer retirement.
The books extremely shallow "screw the world!" It was during this portion of the book that I realized two things. Tim Ferriss was not the type of person I wanted to look up to. As for creating a new lifestyle, well this book applies if you already have money to burn and resources to fall back on and can afford to receive the pink slip that will surely come your way if you deal with people - particularly managers - as the author suggests. This book is just another 'sleight of hand' of the sort he brags of throughout.
About the Author:
Really Unhappy With This - Career Builder Book Review
So naturally, I felt guilty when I was working fewer hours than my peers. I volunteered to be the good guy and helped my busy and overworked co-workers in the name of teamwork. All those glowing reviews for his book are from other "gurus." First off, they are too glowing. I also don't believe in waiting until I'm old until I start doing the things I want to do and enjoy, before health and medical issues creep up. Millions that fit the above criteria are content with life statistically, but in their work-lives, unfulfilled.
Buy it and give this guy another buck so he can say see I told you it would work. OTTOMAN FURNITURE FOR SALE.
